Encierro (Confinement) 2010

4 minutes 42 seconds, FHD Video, color, sound

A woman and three policemen are in an unknown location. The policemen begin to dance to reggaeton (music derived from Latin America), while the women remain passive in the center. This piece displays an absurd situation which reflects the authoritarian roles between genders. In order to produce this work, I researched reggaeton music videos and noticed a pattern: the men would stay in middle and sing while being surrounded by women dancing. In this video, I changed their roles – situating the female and male characters in different position to experiment and reflect how disturbing changing roles can be.
This work is a reflection carried to absurdity through an ironic and innocent approach but through a concrete and precise manner. Ultimately, this piece is an observation on gender roles.
